The ‘Expanded’ Job Support Scheme helps businesses who have been forced to close due to a local lockdown.

Expanded Job Support Scheme (JSS)

For clarity, in this article we cover the ‘Expanded’ JSS; this is the scheme to support businesses that have been forced to close due to local lockdowns.

The ‘Original JSS’, which supports businesses across the UK, including those not in a local lockdown, instead see this article.

Summary

  • The JSS has been expanded to support businesses required to close their premises due to the coronavirus restrictions.
  • The government will cover up to two-thirds of those employees’ salaries.
  • There are also local lockdown cash grants, of up to £3,000 per month.
  • The scheme will begin on 1st November and will be available for 6 months, and reviewed in January.
  • Details are still not clear – if you believe you may be eligible, please contact coronavirus@nimbleaccounting.co.uk for more advice.

Eligibility

  • Only businesses whose premises are legally required to shut for some period over winter as part of local or national restrictions will receive grants to pay the wages of staff who cannot work.
  • Businesses will only be eligible to claim the grant while they are subject to restrictions and employees must be off work for a minimum of seven consecutive days.

Other points

  • Government will pay two-thirds of employees’ salaries, up to a maximum of £2,100 per month
  • Employers will not be required to contribute towards wages, and only need to pay the Employers’ NICs and pension contributions.
